Hi Fred,
I recently had an exchange with Sherman concerning the surviving ex-Dallas
PCCs. I told him it wasn't fair to loyal Texans that a bunch of New England
Yankees were hoarding all those "Texas Rangers."
Sherman responded that as a native of Texas, he would love to see one of the
cars come "home", but barn space was already an issue.
BTW, if Seashore believes those cars (and the five surplus flat roof
"Tremonts") are worth $50,000 as they sit, maybe I could ask and get
$850,000 for our current house.
I still like your idea of painting one of the cars in a half Dallas, half
Boston paint scheme. It's a good idea no Speedrail Curvesiders survived, or
we'd have to paint it in FOUR color schemes.
I once asked somebody at OERM if they would consider painting one of their
five "Hollywood" cars in a Portland paint scheme. I was told that no, only a
car that actually served in Portland could be restored as a Portland car. I
accepted that stance until I found out they are planning to paint one of
their other "duplicates" to represent a member of that series which served
elsewhere, though the particular car being modified never served there. Plus
they are in no hurry to repaint their P.E. Birney which was loaned to Tucson
back into it's correct colors.
Seriously, last I heard, Sherman is still alive (he's about the same age as
our Midnight, who is sixteen and showing no signs of slowing down.) I have
some video of Sherman, courtesy of Jim Holland.
We are going to go to Phoenix later this month. I plan to make an
appointment to visit the small trolley museum there and check out the latest
work on the new light rail line. When we were there during October, they
were dismantling the trackage on the former railroad R.O.W. and prepping the
corridor near the university.
K.
