All of us have fond memories from our youth... for it I look back on the
late '50 and early '60. Mom would let me hope the shuttle bus in front of
the house to the Grove to catch the streetcar. I then rode over over the
city... Buhl Planetarium, Carnegie Museum, or just downtown to Bill and
Walt's to look at the model trains I couldn't afford to buy.
My early youth was spent in Mt. Oliver - where I could walk across the
street to the corner store and fill my tummy with penny candy - FOR A
PENNY! Mom and I would walk up to the grocery store on Brownsville and ride
the trolley home. On a Saturday my older sister would take me into the
movie theather on Brownsville for a Matinee. And I remember my kindergarten
class taking a ride on the Knoxville Incline. Two years ago I drove through
Mt Oliver - it looked like a war zone! I would not want to walk the streets
there for anything.
Nor would I let me grandkids hop on public transportation to go crosstown
like I did - I'd be afraid they would never come back. Guess my point is
times change... don't know if it is for the better or worst. But I will
point out that for our children/grandchildren these will be "the good old
days".
