I am one of those who actually have a lot of fun everyday at work. Since I was a small child I have always gone, as my grandmother used to say, 'hogwild' over buses, trolley coaches, streetcars, etc. Not that I don't complain, every now and then, but usually the complaints are directed at the kunckleheaded management and some of their off-beat decisions. In the last ten years I have received only one (1) complaint from a passenger and have been called into the Station Superintendents office only once concerning operational items. It is a good job, even in todays upsidedown world. The money and benefits, at least here in New Pittsburgh, are EXCELLENT.

I made the decision to go into public transit operator work while attending Kent State University. I thought to myself, "why go through all this education and end up in an office, unhappy, making not that much when I could do something I really like and get paid very well for it."

Yes, you are correct that some individuals, who probably have no life to begin with, do view those who have fun on the job with a 'suspicious' eye. These individuals are so unhappy that they have to try to make everyone around them unhappy. I will probably never be a supervisor (and really do not wish to be one) because it is the general consensus that those who 'have too much fun at work' can never be considered for such a 'serious' job as supervisor. Little do they know ! I have watched operators become supervisors then, do to the transit authority imposed pressure, become unhappy with their new position. They begin to have health problems and age well beyond their actual years. I also have taken the approach that one must 'change with the times' in order to keep healthy and delay aging. The past is nice to remember and to learn from but not to dwell in. It works for me.

As for people who like their jobs for more then just a paycheck, suspect
your percentage is rather optimistic. Also have wondered if actually liking
your job is viewed as a 'threat' to others??? Not considered a 'team'
player if enjoying what you do.
