The problem with taking foreign languages is that we fail to
comprehend just how much time it took us to learn the first or native
language. It isn't going to be any easier to learn the second one.
List to two, three, four, and five year old kids around you ....
Then ten-year olds. And fifteen year olds. And twenty-year olds.
It takes a whole lot of effort to learn to speak properly. But you
didn't know how much effort you were putting it to it as you grew
up. You just did it.

It is going to take just as much effort to learn that second
langage. Just as much practice. Just as much interaction with
other people. Then eventually you get it.

Carl Schultz, who makes video tapes for Transit Gloria Mundi, once
remarked, it took a long while as a foreign exchange student and then
one day he realized he was sitting at dinner and he realized what the
family was saying.

I just wished I had had the opportunity, like he did, to live with a
German family in high school.

Rich Allman, who is on our list, was another who had that
opportunity. He lived in Munich for a while in high school and I
believe he still reads German fan magazines.
