I'd guess so it can call out stops, or so lineside signs can be updated 
with "where's the next car".

I liked that about the Gothenburg, Sweden system. Next car is 5 minutes 
away. Run back inside where it's warm.

Speaking of that I hope it's not cold in Stockholm next week.
