My thesis advisor learned to drive in Germany and doesn't understand
the fuss about the Turnpike lanes...he was used to driving on the
autobahns. In fact he hadn't noticed that the Turnpike lanes were
narrower than most freeways', because (even after living in the US for
decades) all lanes on American roads seem ridiculously wide.
No argument about training. But unless transit undergoes a huge revival,
there won't be the political will to change anything. People "have to"
have their cars.
