Check the WSJ/New York Times on the state library website, Fred. The
database is searchable - including such other things like the Philadelphia
Company.
But back to Stella - and thank you, Joshua for the link. I'd heard of the
case but never read the background. And as luck would have it, about a week
ago someone sent me a listing of "Stella Awards".
But in reading the WSJ article, was struck by this comment:
Mr. Elliott, the juror, says he began to realize that the case was about
"callous disregard for the safety of the people."
Remember the SEPTA case about ten years ago where a small boy lost a foot in
a defective escalator on the Broad St. subway, and the SEPTA lawyers argured
that it was the mother's fault? And when the jury found for the family,
SEPTA ran to the press and announced that they should not be expected to pay
the judgment because that would mean reducing service. (I'll have to do
some searching to see what then happened) Too often, there is no one to
protect the least among us.
