I just ran across an announcement that Philadelphia Rapid Transit
planned to build the Luzerne Car House in order to provide a home for
all those brand new Nearside Cars. For those of you who don't
remember the facility at 10th and Luzerne, it was about as wide and
a lot deeper that Craft Avenue in Pittsburgh.
The estimated construction costs back in the summer of 1912 was
$500,000.
They build single family homes in this neighborhood for that kind of
money today.
Explains, doesn't it, why the trolley companies wanted to just pay
the interest on their bonds and then pay off the principal with
inflated dollars years later.
