A Peter Witt car was really a fare collection system. Passengers entered at the front door. Between the front and center doors were longitindal seats. The conductor was located at center doors. Passengers making short trips could sit at the front and pay their fare as they got off. Those making longer trips or a cross seat could pay there fare as they passed the conductor and then sit the cross seats at the back of the car until they exited at the rear doors.
Peter Witt had a patent on his design. When the TTC purchased Peter Witt cars in early 1920s, Witt's representaties demanded royalities of $50 per car which was ulimately paid by the car builder (Canadian Car & Foundry) according to the terms of purchase agreement.

Just what defined a "Peter Witt" car. Was it more than just the center door fare collection ? And did Peter Witt actually collect royalties on these ?
