I went thru one day in the '70s and the crossing arm was down on the
roof of an inbound air car. We cleared it by about 10 feet. (Of
course, I've had the same thing happen with autos, trucks, and even
school buses at other crossings.) Scared the crap out of me when I saw
it. It wouldn't have done any good to dump the air as the train
won't stop that fast anyway, and the slack action could have caused a
wreck right on the crossing.
I sort of hate to say this, but that new crossing looks like CSX Risk
Management putting costs before safety.
