A heated debate is raging in Vancouver over proposed conversion of
Skytrain from passenger proof of purchase fare collection to the
installation of turnstiles. Converting to turnstiles could entail
enormous first and ongoing expense, including the restructuring of
passenger access, and yet render little net benefit in terms of the
objectives of reducing fare evasion and crime on the Skytrain system.
I'd be interested in any data on the rate of fare evasion and crime on
Toronto TTC's rail rapid transit (subway) system - and the Scarborough
ALRT line. Does the latter (basically same technology as Skytrain) use
turnstiles or PPOP?
Is anyone aware of any comparisons between PPOP systems (e.g.,
Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton) and turnstile systems (e.g., Toronto,
Montreal) in terms of fare collection/evasion rates and crime?
