And there was one on that list that my wife sat next to in church and
never knew it until afterward when the assistant rector said, "Did
you know who you were sitting with?" The man was in Lancaster
filming the movie "The Witness" and he chose to simply be one of the
flock that Sunday at St. James Episcopal Church. Harrison Ford
probably was a lot happier that Marie didn't recognize him. Her
memories were that his coat was covered with dandruff. How about
that ... just like the rest of us except they earn their money
entertaining the public. But they still put their pants on one leg
at a time.
I palled around with a local railfan named Bill Allen as a young
man. Bill had an MG TD. We did crazy things like starting it with
a crank at a gas station just for effect. I remember driving it
across Philadelphia from Kensington to 69th Street with the
windscreen folded down. When we looked at ourselves in the mirror
at 69th Street Terminal that afternoon we looked like two coal
miners. Bill's mom was a Disney, I think a first cousin to
Walter. I guess Bill came by railfanning naturally.
There were also a lot of non modeling railfans in high places and who
were not in the industry. One that comes to mind, whose pictures
were published, was Senator Richard Neuberger from Oregon.
My wife's sister went through Juliard and performed all over the
United States along with her husband as duo classical pianists.
Most normal people don't recognize them but I was surprised when
Walter Keevil, the equipment engineer from Chicago Transit Authority,
walked into the house one day, heard one of their records on the
phonograph and immediately recognized Veri and Jamanis performing. I
remember having dinner at their home, sitting next to a great man and
fantastic conversationalist, not long before he died ... the flamenco
dancer Jose Greco. Great in my mind because he was normal. And
I was once asked to take pictures for them at a party with all the
Gershwin relatives in New York City.
I guess, if anything, I would not want to be famous. Can you
imagine trying to get away from the crush of people?
