The only earthquake I ever experienced was, believe it or not, a very
minor magnitude 4.5 in Lancaster, PA. I had my hand in the mouth of
our Doberman removing something he wasn't supposed to be eating when
everything started buzzing and every hair on his body stood up straight.

I remember spending a few days in Harre Demoro's home in Oakland,
California back in 1974. He lived on Jordan Road up in the foothills.

I asked if the canyon in front of his house was a branch of the
Hayward fault. His answer was, "Yes."

"How often does it move?," I asked

"The chandelier in the dining room swings about once a year, " Harre
said. "But we don't have hurricanes and you do."

I asked next if he knew where is property was.

"We resurveyed the whole street last year and everybody's land
overlapped everyone else."

There have to be some redeem values, Herb. The climate is
fantastic. Remember the population in Pennsylvania has had almost
zero growth over the last 30 years. Ohio hasn't grown much either
(10.6 to 11.3 million since 1970). But California has grown from 19
milllion to 36 million people in the same period.

I would rather be in western Minnesota but a lot of people love that
California climate.
