Speed *Seems* slow but Down 6% grade sharing the track with 8 or 9
other lines....... -- weekdays midday in the latter 1950s 42-Dormont
and 38-Mt.Lebanon headways were 15-min - other lines weren't far from
that - headways every 20 to 24 minutes so it was not uncommon to have
several cars in the tunnel at a time. It can be difficult to judge
how fast the car in front is slowing so a lower speed would allow
greater time to stop. Keeping the speed under control allows for
greater safety margin Should Something Fail / air loss / whatever.
In the early 1950s service on All Lines was Much More Frequent so it
probably wasn't uncommon to have a half dozen cars in the tunnel Inbound
at any one time.
.
Herb probably has much experience following TrolleyCars inbound in the
tunnel, even though there weren't as many lines in the 1970s.
.
I always enjoyed the tunnel and remember one day very distinctly when I
was coming home on the 42 on a 1601-city car -- motorman had power
about halfway depressed as we entered the tunnel and we leisurely
climbed the grade. When he put it on the floor it was Not Unlike a
Pig stuck with a Hot Poker -- *Seemed* like the car was moving
Considerably Faster with real thunder at each rail joint, breeze from
open window, ozone wafting by -- Wonderful Natural High~!~!~!~!~!
