"Dead Head" distance might also play a factor in locating the Car House
-- Craft might be closer for an AM pullout to the outer end. Yes,
trolleycars didn't dead head but it is extra time to make the route.
Additionally, believe some turnouts and turns needed to be cut into
Smithfield and Carson so the 50 could turn to and from the tunnel. It
was during or right after the war when the turns for the 32 were cut
into the intersection to eliminate the X-Over just north of the
P&LE. Track diagrams of the intersection at various times will
reveal this -- I had seen some but don't remember where they are offhand.
