Just a guess on the second part of your post Jim. Perhaps the crossing at Water and Smithfield was used for East End cars dropping passengers at the B&O Station located there. From there, a turn onto Grant ala the interurbans and then onto 2nd, 6th, etc. Would be interesting to see if there are indeed turnoffs from Grant to these streets to confirm my hypothesis.

Included is Smithfield and Carson 1929 which shows double track turn to
and from downtown to each of W. Carson and E. Carson. At this time
the X-Over for the 32 Shuttle is underneath the label 'Smithfield' but
this X-Over was moved back to just beyond the power house later.
Photographic evidence so far reveals that the turns to and from W.
Carson and the tunnel (to eliminate the need of the X-Over) was put in
during or just after WW2 -- could have been done about same time to
allow for 50 line to use South Hills -- that probably wouldn't happen
until later, though, would be my hunch, since interurbans would be
consolidated at SHJ as well as some Carrick lines.
.
Also included is the north end of the Bridge at Water Street - double
tracks still Very Much In Evidence onto Smithfield but why would we want
a cornfield meet in a city street from 2-outbound cars going straight
through Smithfield on Water?~!~?~!~? Wood had two tracks on it as
well -- wonder where the other one disappeared since it didn't come up
to Water and Smithfield?~?~?~?
