In the 1948 PRCo studies forwarded to us by Bill Robb, Leroy Demery had
this information:::
.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
One last tidbit:

In the outlying mill towns, as many as 80-90 percent of the workforce
walked to work.
.......(Tarr, Joel A. 1978. Transportation Innovation and Changing
Spatial Patterns in Pittsburgh, 1850-1934. Chicago: Public Works
Historical Society.)

Leroy W. Demery, Jr.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This may have been in the introduction -- I didn't copy that specific
information.
.
This leaves 10-20% using "Other" transportation (going to work,
outlying mill towns only~!~!) Reason(s) for walking could be short
distance from home, InExpensive, Low Wages needed for items other than
transportation. "Other" could include bikes, private auto, Public
Transit.
.
We are told that the National Average for people using Public Transit
"Today" is 3%. I~F -- in outlying mill areas of Pgh. for workers
only -- 15-18% used public transit that is 500% or 600% Greater Than
Today yet Paltry (15%) when compared to population of the day.
.
Wonder what it would be for the rest of the city and the city as a whole?
