Time to stir the pot and the list again.....

Sorry Boris, go back to sleep, it isn't PCCs....

A rather interesting entry on the closure of the Sarah Street Horse
Car line in Pittsburgh, which was probably the last horse operation
in Pennsylvania.

The route card begins in April 1905 which is, of course, very late
because horse railways began in Pennsylvania in 1859. It shows 1 car
rush AM, 1 car base, 1 car evening rush. I guess considering it was
animal powered, if you were in a rush, you walked over to Carson
Street and took the trolley.

The line ran out of 30th Street Car House and ran from 30th and Sarah
to 11th and Sarah.

On January 1, 1917 it was shortened from 12th to 30th via Sarah. The
schedule was reduced from 10 hours a day to 8 hours a day (8 am to 4
pm). The driver spent one hour before and one hour after taking care
of his horse and was paid for ten hours.

On April 26, 1920 it was not practical to operate the car because the
platforms had sagged so much they were striking the street and the
roof over the platforms had fallen off.

May 23, 1920 service resumed after repairs had been made.

June 29, 1922 the Monongahela Connecting Railwayt removed the
crossing diamond near 29th and Sarah, cutting another 400 feet off
the horse car line, "making it impractical to take the horse car
farther than 29th St. on Sarah.

August 27th, 1923 - route discontinued.

And here is the interesting item ...

"car given to Brashear Memorial on Southside."

Care to comment Derrick???????
