Well Herb I'm not sure if congratulations are in order since your asthma has
evolved. But I'll offer them anyway because I know you'll enjoy retirement
and making Boris jealous running PCCs whenever you want.

Some times it takes a while to answer a post..........sorry for the delay.

You are correct in the respect that the atmosphere in Cleveland is not as
good as it should be. This because of the steel industry which has bounded
back into high gear production over the last several years. The lake,
however, is quite clean and very nice to look at.

In fact, the air pollution has caused me to make one of those major
decisions we must sometimes make. I started out with asthma, which became
asthma/chronic bronchitis, and now has evolved into C.O.P.D./chronic
bronchitis. This illness requires a cleaner atmosphere than here. I have
opted to take a 'disability pension' and relocate back to Western
Pennsylvania, most likely very near P.T.M. I can a good monthly pension
through the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and also, having worked
in past jobs where Social Security was paid, a disability retirement from
the Federal Government. Plus I can work, if I so desire, in something not
requiring the operation of buses (trolley cars are o.k.). I will be happy to
get back to being able to run a PCC when I desire.

The complete freezing of Lake Erie has not happened for some time now. In
fact, the lake shipping routes run all year now. It used to be you would see
10 or 12 ore carrying ships "Wintering Over" at the docks in downtown
Cleveland or the various 'slips' along the Cuyahoga River. For the past ten
or so years you now see them loading and unloading at the docks and slips.
Overseas ships (ocean going) get scarce in the Winter. I have not seen any
foreign, ocean going ships since mid-January at the docks.

The ice on Lake Erie, today, is visible from the shoreline to about 1000
feet out in the lake. Open waters after that. Most Winter days there is no
ice on the lake surface.

Global warming is real !

In the late 1960's I worked - and lived - within two blocks of the
Superior Avenue location seen in the bus photo. We got lots of snow in
Cleveland back then, too - and we endured at least two winters when Lake
Erie was frozen solid enough to allow people to drive cars out onto the ice.
One year, a driver didn't make it back to shore, and had to be rescued by a
Coast Guard helicopter.
