Here is an unusual news release ... Cleveland may be the only place
in the United States where bus ridership is up 4.3 times more than
rail ridership. I can see the bus and highway fanatics jumping on
these numbers.

Ridership up 6 percent in July

CLEVELAND – High gas prices drove more people to use public transit
last month, says the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA).

System-wide, ridership in July 2008 was about 6 percent higher than
July 2007, or about 280,000 rides.

Daily ridership was up 2.61 percent, an increase of about 5,000
rides. RTA now carries 193,700 persons on an average weekday.

Bus ridership increased 6.9 percent – the highest July total since 1998.

Rapid ridership was up 1.6 percent.

Community Circulators showed a 1.6 percent gain.

Paratransit ridership is up more than 13 percent.

With more than 90,000 rides, trolley usage was up more than 72
