Hi Dennis My dad enlisted in RCAF in Pittsburgh. His passport says he went to Canada in Oct. 1941 at age 21. He was told to tell US border officials that he was "going fishing", or so he said. I recall he often said that there was no reason to get out of a perfectly good airplane. Only in latter years did he mention that when the captain said to get out - then leave quickly. He added that it happened twice, and he once landed on a road and it messed up his ankle. But then the RCAF would have flown at night.
I see that you have added a 'Nightingale Sings in Barkley Square' to the Armstrong Brass website. Doesn't that go back to that era?
Concerning Truman's decision, in recent years, have become convinced it was the best decision he ever made. It saved millions of lives. But then Truman had first hand experience as an artillary officer during WWI. Concerning the subject line, for the benefit of others, there are some great travel bargains available to warmer climates. Encountering the kids has been a pleasant surprise at PTM. The 4 and 5 year olds that drag their parents/grandparents to PTM because of Thomas and/or the Polar Express. The one year olds that cry in terror at the strange guy in the white beard, the 2,3 and 4 year olds that gaze in amazement, and the 5 and 6 year olds who have their lists. I prefer the younger ones. I also prefer watching Santa and the kids interact, rather then be a primary participant. Pumpkin Patch also brings out the young families.
