The latest casualty ... Woolworth's 5 & 10 is closing 208 stores and
laying off 28,000 employees. Oh, you thought they went out of
business long ago? Well, they did in the United States. But the
name was sold and persisted elsewhere on the planet. In this case
it is the British chain of stores that went into bankruptcy in
November and will all be closed by January 5. They have been
independent of U. S. control since 1982.
As far as I know, Woolworth Gmbh. in Germany and Austria is still
healthy??????
What happened to those familiar stores with the red name boards and
gold letters? The became Venator Inc., and in 2001 the name was
again changed to Foot Locker, Inc.
Why do I bring it up? Well, Frank W. Woolworth's very first retail
outlet was right here in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and his second one
here in this city appears as a very monumental structure in a lot of
postcards of Penn Square that have trolleys in the foreground.
