And that is why Phil was faced with an $800 price tag for a west coast trip.  Probably looking at specific dates around a holiday.  
 
It was about ten years ago I had a discussion with a travel agent.  Asked for a cheap fare to Europe around part of a certain month, and the agent kept asking 'what day do you want to travel'.  Kept thinking 'what doesn't the agent understand', but have since concluded it was what I didn't understand.  I wasn't the norm.  The norm is to be somewhat locked into certain travel dates because of work or other commitments.  And business travel is usually about specific dates and even time of day, and with an option to make changes and cancellations.
