Welcome George. Interesting to know that there is a transportation
professional in our midst in addition to John Swindler. And if we
get too far off the deep end, you know where the delete key is but
please do not be offended.
When we had a three day weekend get together at PTM in 2006, it
included a school bus tour of parts of West Penn Railways and
Pittsburgh Railways rights-of-ways, a day of playing with the cars at
PTM, some nice restaurants and a lot of great fun. And if we can do
it again, I know that Ed's more recent tours have included the
Stubenville (Ohio), New Castle and Sharon lines. Twist his arm guys
and maybe we can do it again this year.
There are some fabulous people on that list who will bend over
backwards for others. One of my favorite stories concerns the chief
perpetrator of this list. When my wife evicted me about 14 months
ago, a man named Brashear asked me if I needed any "used" furniture
because he was "cleaning out" his home in Trafford. I said that if
he happened to have a coffee table or a television table, I could
them. Derrick appeared a day or two later and 230 miles from home
bearing two brand new tables. His excuse was that he didn't have
what I needed so he went to Ikea and bought them. I simply thought
that it was fabulous that he drove across the state to have lunch and
dinner with me at a time when I was at one of my lowest points.
Derrick is a very modest person but he deserves to be acknowledged
for his generosity.
And he isn't the only person like that on this list of names. I
could name others but doing so could potentially embarass the
recipients of generosity while making the donors feel good. I will
not do that.
By the way, if anyone wanted to hijack this list and lead it off into
industrial archeology of a slightly different format, you might not
offend Mr. Brashear. For those who do not know him, one of
Derrick's other interests is old factories or at least steel mill
history. He has dragged me through the Carrie Furnace in Homestead
and to a lecture on Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore. He went through
the Sloss Furnace and told me I should see it so the next time I was
in Birmingham, Alabama, I did. It is one of the better steel mill
museums.
The link is to Birmingham's Sloss Furnace. Be sure to click on the
"virtual tour." It will you lead you to six different views of the
museum ... 180 to 360 degree sweeps of different parts of the
furnance from the engine room, furnaces from above and below, the
staging room floor. All sorts of interesting stuff.
