As I recall, there were about 127 cars still in service after the East End
lines closed in 1967. The GE equipped 1700s, 1775-1799 were removed from
service and scrapped around 1968-69, making the system all Westinghouse.
When the "hilltop" lines closed in late 1971, the worst of the 1600s were
retired, but some were still needed to supplement the remaining 1700s on the
remaining South Hills lines.
The Early Action Program called for 90 cars to be rebuild as an interim
measure as Skybus was still on the table. There were less than 75 1700s
left, so a number of 1600s were also upgraded and renumbered into the 1700
series, though one was numbered 77/54 (The Flyin' Fraction) and another, a
"flat face" car (collision repair), was numbered 1976.
The very last car to be completed in the overhaul program was former
interurban PCC 1613, which was renumbered as 1799. The car is currently at
PTM. So a 1600 was shopped in 1979.
Ironic that this car completed the PCC rebuilding program as it was the
first of the PCC interurbans, though it was initially built as a city car
(like all 1600 series interurbans) and lost both its pilot and original
spotlight over the years.
