You are our friend Mr.Brashear.  Seems the car was moving 'swiftly' according to an external witness but those on board didn't notice anything unusual until the car hit the pole did they.  Apparently the car did derail before the bridge which gave it the 'advantage' in going over the side and into the river.  'Island' is mentioned in the article; Neville Island?
