Moses Cleaveland's statue stands in the Southwest Quadrant of Public Square (in front of the Terminal Tower) and the spelling is "C l e a v e l a n d". Don't know about the newspaper story. I never heard that one before.

The story (not sure if it's true) is that sometime around 1800 a newspaper 
there didn't have enough space to typeset "Cleaveland" in their masthead, so 
they shortened it to "Cleveland", and the revised spelling stuck.
