For the most part, I've given up trying to confuse people with the facts.
Somebody has a web site covering abandoned amusement parks. His site has a
blurb requesting additions and corrections. He chose to ignore the
information I provided him.
Another guy has a web site pertaining to wig-wag crossing signals and those
crossing signals with the motorized stop sign. I sent him PHOTOGRAPHS of
some survivors along a former C&NW line. He thanked me, but refused to add
my contributions until somebody HE knew could travel to those locations to
verify my information.
Then there was the guy with an insulator/power pole/railroad web site who
stumbled across an old, no longer used streetlight pole in Wilkes Barre or
Scranton. I forget which town. He mistook it for an old trolley line pole
with a bracket arm. He asked if anybody could confirm if this was a line
pole since it was along a former car line. I responded with scans of that
particular type of street light and some other construction details
indicating it was not a line pole.
The guy responded with a curt "thank you" and proceeded to let me know he
needed confirmation from Ed Miller since I wasn't a "Pennsylvania trolley
historian." He eventually received his confirmation from Ed. Ed basically
made the same observations I did. So the guy corrected his web site and
wrote a protracted "thank you" to Ed Miller, gushing about getting the
information from "The greatest of Pennsylvania traction historians"
(preceeding paraphrased.)
The moral of the story, Herb? It takes a big man to admit he's wrong. It
takes a bigger man to keep his mouth shut when he knows he's right.
K.
P.S.- I accept corrections from more knowledgeable people when I commit
factual errors on my web site. I also thank those who catch the errors and
correct me.
