The '59 hulk is mine, not Bob's. It's pre-emissions control engine is
"grandfathered", Fred. But I've decided a PCV system is the right thing to
do. Not only better for the environment, but better for the engine. Less
sludge build-up in the crankcase, which enhances engine life.
The old hulk also has electronic ignition and modern disk brakes. No road
salt and no excessive strain on the frame and suspension, easy to perform
repairs and driving about 75 miles per week means I can drive it for some
time to come.
PCV systems came into use in California for emissions control circa 1963,
became mandatory nationally in 1968 and was used since the 1940s by the
military and on vehicles exported to countries with dusty dirt roads since
at least the 1950s.
Sealed ball joints in Nevada? The boots dry rot quickly here, as do CV
joints on modern FWD vehicles.
The attached photos are from when we moved into this house back in 2004. I
made both vintage machines earn their keep.
Oh, and like I noted before, I can put you in another '49 Packard....it's
currently painted an ugly light green, but PTM's crew could repaint it for
you in between their traction equipment restoration projects. ;-)
