I had time to visit the city side of the 6th, 7th and 9th Street bridges today as we went into the city early for the opera, Parking and traffic get to be an issue when all 5 theaters downtown have and event and there is a 4:15 Steeler game across the river. Sorry, no photographs yet a I did not take the camera to the opera.
The plaques on the doors of the end columns read:
6th Street 1927-28
7th Street 1925-26
9th Street 1925-26
There is a sign between the 6th & 7th St bridge explaining the historic status of the three bridges and it is even more confusing. It says the 7th Street bridge was built first and then the 9th and 6th. However, there is a photograph credited to American Bridge Company that shows the 6th Street bridge completed with work only half done on the 7th. The caption could be incorrect.
The 6th Street bridge replaced the one built by Roebling and is the one in the famous trolley shots shown in several traction videos released by Sic Transit Gloria from the turn of the century.
The 7th Street bridge replaced one built by Lundenthal.
