From the Light Rail Now web site. Sure it's propaganda but I guess
it is our kind of propaganda. The amazing thing here is that the
automobile registration rates per capita in the European Union
nations are on parallel with the United States. The primary
differences are that they live closer to their jobs, only about 70%
use cars to get to work were 99% of us do, and overall they might
drive 5000 miles a year to our 15000. You also use a lot less
energy when you are heating apartments instead of 25,000 square foot
houses. You use less energy when you hot water heater turns on only
when you open the hot water spigot instead of keeping a 75 or 100
gallon tank of water hot all day when you're not home to use it. I
could put a lot of et ceteras behind this but people would say, that
Schneider isn't being patriotic.

Petroleum consumption comparison USA, European Union, Australia
A number of transportation and energy analysts have noted the huge
disparity between the USA's dependency on petroleum and the more
diversified energy profile of other advanced idustrial countries,
which promote public transport and electrification of transportation
systems to a far greater extent. Jim Gagnepain highlights "some
interesting facts from the CIA Factbook." Jim has confined his
comparison to the USA, Europe Union (EU), and Australia.
Population (2005)
· USA: 296 million
· EU: 457 million
· Australia: 20 million
Daily Oil Consumption
· USA: 19.6 Million BBLs
· EU: 14.5 Million BBLs
· Australia: 796,000 BBLs
GDP (US$)
· USA: $11.75 trillion
· EU: $11.65 trillion
· Australia: $612 billion
Jim then performs "a little math on these figures", as shown below:
Yearly Oil Consumption per Person
· USA: 24.09 BBL/person
· EU: 11.68 BBL/person
· Australia: 14.6 BBL/person
GDP/BBL of Oil
· USA: $1,644/BBL
· EU: $2,192/BBL
· Australia: $2,107/BBL
