I'm just forwarding this item from Peter Folger for all of you to
enjoy. I'm sure, if no one else, John Swindler will enjoy the trams
of Glasgow. No, I do not know who pirated them and put them on You
Tube.
Glasgow was the last major system in the British Isles. It was
their Pittsburgh ... a dirty industrial city that made steam ships
and had seen better times when I got there in 1960. But still, what
a pleasure it was to ride down Argyle Street on the top deck of a
tram. The city was still hiding under a pall of smoke in 1960, most
of it produced by British Railways commuter trains but the wires were
being strung as I watched for the new electric commuter trains. Two
years after I left, the trams were stilled.

But some of the memories were priceless. I recall asking a carbarn
foreman if it might be possible to remove the only single-deck car to
the alley so I could a picture. He asssigned a worker to it and sent
us out. Well, that worker didn't stop when we got the alley. He
said the sun was no good there. In typical Glaswegian hospitality,
he insisted the sun and backdrop would be much better down at the
University of Glasgow ... a free private fantrip. And off we
rocketed through the streets. For everything else you need MasterCard.

Please enjoy. Now I need to dash off to run trams at the Baltimore
Streetcar Museum. Hope there are a few passengers today.
