The best one I experienced first hand was a trip from Chama to Antonito on
the Cumbres & Toltec. We were high above the Toltec Gorge when some free
range cattle were standing on the track ahead of the locomotive. The
whistle and bell did nothing to move them, so the fireman grabbed a handful
of coal, climbed out to the front of the locomotive and threw lumps of coal
as we crept closer. The coal did the trick. Cattle are very much like
cats---they do what they want to do, when they want to do it and of their
own volition. (other than being pelted by a fireman hanging on to the front
of a multi ton locomotive)
