Third Army was at Fort McPherson in Atlanta (which has a stop on the
MARTA line outside the front gate). It had a relatively new big
concrete building with no windows next door to an even bigger concrete
building which housed Forces Command (FORSCOM). Third Army was one of a
small number of units (21st TAACOM in Indianapolis was another) which
was a mixture of active duty soldiers and reservists. When Saddam
invaded Kuwait in August 1990, nearly all the active people went over
very quickly. I think any equipment was airlifted. We reservists had
some very strange monthly drills that autumn, since the active people
were gone. Some reservists volunteered for active duty. The rest of us
were called up in February. Most people stayed at Fort McPherson, but
the computer people (including me) went over on one of the Air Force
charter flights out of Fort Jackson, South Carolina. We got there the
day after the cease fire, but still had to stay six months because our
computer network was needed to manage the withdrawal of people and
equipment.

Hi George
Where was 3rd Army stationed in fall 1990??? What was your Desert Storm
experience?? If 1st Army was at Ft. Meade, were you stationed at Ft.
McPherson? Did your unit equipment deploy through Jacksonville??
Being in a transportation unit, and working at a seaport, I was
"fortunate beyond my comprehension."
Cheers
John
