That explains why John didn't mind the U. S. Marine Corps boot camp.
Preferred way was a one mile walk.... Right.

Well, John, as a teenager, when I missed the Lititz bus home, many
times I would walk home from Lancaster rather than wait a hour for
the next one. It was only three miles. I could be home before I
could if I waited for the bus. I also took a lot of pictures on the
Pennsylvania Railroad in this area by walking ... did the Atglen and
Susquehanna Branch from Columbia to Smithville (18 miles) on July 3,
1957. (I know the date well because I forgot it was my father's 50th
birthday.) I did the other 18 miles from Atglen to Smithville the
week before. I did Pittsburgh Railways (87, 56, 94, 35, 36, Shaker
Heights, CTA's Lake Street right-of-way, part of the North Shore
around Waukegan, a lot of PST's Sharon Hill line, the swamps down by
Eastwick, University-Clayton in St. Louis and a lot of other nice
places by shoe leather express too. So, after pulling your chain, I
need to admit I didn't mind the "walks" in army basic training either.

Trouble was, we could eat three square meals a day and a lot of
snacks too when we did that. It didn't hurt to wolf down 120
calories in a Coke. When we get in the car to go to a restaurant
and then drive back home, we just can't enjoy as much food.
