"MTA" hit the national charts June 29, 1959 and stayed there 6 weeks, rising
as high as #15.  But it was written in 1948 as a political statement.  I
have a history of it, down at the library, that was published some years
back in the BSRA newsletter.

Would it not have been easier for his wife to have given Charlie a  
nickel when the train came into Scollay Square?    But then we would  
not have had such a wonderful political folk song.....   We also  
would have taxes paying 80% of the cost of a bus fare today.

Thanks Jerry.   Seems to me that song actually made the charts about  
the same time MTA opened the line to Riverside in 1959.
