Yes. And here in the 'burgh, it seems like there are other things PAT is not required to do that the private Railways company had to do. Does PAT have to pay the county or city, tax, on any revenue tracks currently in the streets?

I know Butler Street through Lawrenceville had tracks almost totally removed, and the street was re-paved apparently not too long after the Pgh Railways abandonment of routes 94 and 95, in 1960. There was a section on Butler between 40th street and 39th street, wherein the head of the rail was burned off. I think this was a section of Butler that no longer had cobblestone between the tracks, but instead had asphalt paving.

But, I recall that, for several years, just across the 40th street bridge, my dad's car bumped across asphalt that was poured over the old Millvale/Etna car tracks and red brick paving, evident from time to time, through the asphalt. I think this non-removal-of- trackage-area was limited to the Millvale area, though. Years and years later, when North Avenue in Millvale was scraped, lo and behold, there was streetcar trackage. It was revealed from the intersection of North and Grant, all the way to Klopfer, and up Klopfer to Evergreen Road.

And I guess the West End lines trackage survived - at least a noticeable amount of the street trackage for a good many years, after the Railways abandoned the lines and even after PAT took over. Perhaps this was due in part, to the dispute that went on well into 1961, as to whether there'd be streetcars or buses in the West End.

It's always amusing to note that the government compelled the private
company to completely remove its tracks, but did not make similar demands
once the transit operator was the government.

Hi Folks,
I'm sorry I can't find the email, but I know one of you mentioned that
Ellsworth Avenue was currently scraped, for re-paving, and that the
streetcar tracks are evident. Yes, indeed. Attached are some photos I
took on Sunday. While walking along Ellsworth, it was interesting to see
the looks on a couple young (maybe twenty-something) 10-speed bikers' faces
as they rode by. They stopped, pointed at the tracks that curved from
Ellsworth onto Neville. I couldn't hear their conversation, except for the
word "rails." I walked across to them -perhaps to give a little transit
history - but they peddled away before they saw me.

The photo I have labeled, "ellsworth looking twd layover area," I believe
this is where the cars were stored by Pittsburgh Railways for rush hours,
for baseball crowds leaving Forbes Field.

Matt
