I took my wife to the Philadelphia flower show a couple months ago. Normal people paid $25 to park near the flower show. Instead, from Lancaster we parked for free at the Norristown train station and used regional rail to center city. Plus avoided the Schuylkill Expressway parking lot, and I enjoyed the train. Amtrak from Lancaster was not cost effective.

Manhattan parking is $5 per day, plus off-peak round trip train fare on NJ Transit from Metropark.

Chicago parking is free (at least 7-8 years ago) at the outer ICG stations plus the $10 weekend METRA pass.

Weekend parking is also free in Washington, plus the Metrorail day ticket.

Of course it helps to have a tolerant wife. And sometimes just have to weigh the alternatives, 'bite the bullet' and park in a center city - or airport long term. But you can't weigh the alternatives if you don't know alternatives exist.

Cheers

John
