They come there because the corporation has gone to great lengths to
make them want to come. Scott Becker would be one of the better
people to address how to get young people involved. He does schedule
days each year when he invites the community to come and see what
volunteer opportunities are available. Among other things, we serve
as a place when high school kids can put in community service time
that some schools require these days to get a diploma. Some of them
find they like us and stay on. I've worked with the same teen age
(15-16 year old) female elf at Christmas time for two years and she
brings a lot to the table.

I was once talking to Dave Hamley. I asked him why I was always
able to count 35 to 48 percent females at any of the museum social
functions such as the award dinners. Dave thought for a moment and
responded, "I guess it's because no one told them they didn't
belong." We have a female educator, a female motorman/conductor
instructor, a female serving as the store manager and events
coordinator. One of Bruce Well's daughters is on the board of
trustees.

I am familiar with a museum where a rather nice man of African decent
joined us and after a year he disappeared. I later discovered that
one the members of the board of trustees called him a Nigger. I
remember a man of similar complexion at PTM who died of a heart
attack. Afterward someone put of a wreath and memorial to him in
the substation. He was simply one of us.

I think you can go a long way if you wish to make people feel wanted,
needed and comfortable.
