A public reply to Matt Berry:
I did discover, Matt Berry, that you can simply browse the Pittsburgh Press from day 1 to day 365 if you wish column by column, page by page looking for things that are relevant.
Your piece by Ivan Saunders' editorial on riding the 56 McKeesport cars just before the abandonment prompted me to see if there was a way to browse by pages and look for the abandonment. Hmmm. Yes, you can.
And in the process I came across the story of the big storm that wiped out the Glassport line. I'll post it shortly. I'll also post the articles about some of the other damage in Glassport because I think it was also relevant. People rode the trolleys to go to work and if the factories were shuttered by the storm, that too is important.
But also interesting in browsing is being reminded of and seeing those old coming strips. Remember Nancy and Sluggo? Or Pricilla's Pop? or Bugs Bunny? They were all in the press. Even Pogo who told us we have met the enemy and they are us. Nice thing about some of those comic strips is being reminded about words that have dropped below the radar. Cicero in Bugs Bunny used the word Phooey. No when was the last time you heard that expletive?
Have a nice day.
