Thanks from all of us to Fred for sharing the great pictures from the
eastern part of the state. It is not bad here in Armstrong County, about 40
miles up the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh. We received about 13" of snow
and by Saturday afternoon the sun came out and my driveway was clear.
Living in a rural area (650 sq mile county with 69,000 people) has it
advantages, namely fewer cars and less traffic. Road crews can get out and
do their job. The township typically leaves some snow on my road and only
salts the steep hill. Currently there is one lane plowed with a passing
zone in front of my house where I cleared the width of the street. Also
helping us was the dry snow we received as opposed to the wet snow that fell
farther south. There are no power issues in Armstrong County.
We are to get between 4"-8" today and it will probably come in on the low
side. The difference will be the temperatures between here and the east.
When we got to Philadelphia on 12/24/09, there was over 20" of snow on the
ground. By 12/26, almost all of it was gone. We had less snow, but did not
see the ground until mid-January. It was 0 here at 6 am yesterday and it is
not supposed to go above freezing for a good while. What we have, we will
keep around.
As I told my students, history is made every day. Make sure to take note!
