Total USA railcar ownership as of 1 January 2008 was 1,385,709 (which excludes Canadian and Mexican reporting marks).  580,635, or 42%, were railway owned by reporting mark.  This is somewhat misleading, though, as non-rail ownership in these stats includes TTX and other railway-owned car companies. Probably closer to a 50-50 split in reality.

  This was the other picture that disappeared in the ether with the demented system....
  It shows the Pittsburgh and Ohio Central freight train with an covered hopper (empty or loaded with plastic pellets) passing the open car at PTM) on Friday.   The
  internet discloses that AMCX are the reporting marks for BP Amoco Chemical Corp.   

  I was amazed on this recent trip cross country to discover that more than perhaps 90 percent of the railroad cars I saw were privately owned.
