Adverse selection, I suppose.
By contrast, the last time I traveled extensively on CN and CP, the largest proportion of the cars were railway owned. Can't speak for UP, but would of course note that there is a lot of private owner coal car traffic and trona ash traffic on that road.

Interesting. What I was seeing on trains on CN, CP and UP was probably much closer to a 90-10 split with 90 percent being private owner cars. If its 58-42, why are the railroads ignoring their own cars and using the private cars? Because the private owners are loading their own cars?
