Where does it say separation of church and state in the Constitution?? Can't find that quote in my copy from the US Govt Printing Office.
Perhaps you are referring to a comment from one of T. Jefferson's letters to a Baptist group.
But that doesn't change the intent. It was to break from the English practice of the government supporting the Church of England. And at the time it was a revolutionary concept for a nation not to support an official religion.
However often overlooked is Article 6, clause 3 which states that 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States'. (this might be something with which you can have some fun)
