John:
I used to supervise a lady in Philadelphia after her boss retired and was not replaced. That was when we knew for sure the field staff in labor statistics was done ... when you don't replace Philadelphia, you are not going to replace anyone.
Well this lady was extremely good ... better than some of them men we had with college degrees but she never had the money to go to college. She was black and there just wasn't money in her family to put her through school. But she was endowed with gray matter and she could learn on her own.
You should have seen the look on her face, John, one Christmas season when I showed up in Philadelphia with a poinsettia plant as her Christmas present. No one had done that for her before. She left us and on the strength of my recommendation got a job at Temple University. She was still at Temple last year and I am still getting Christmas cards from her every year.
It's not transit related but it is a nice Christmas story.

The SEPTA manager said 'I don't expect any miracle, but we are in desperate need of id cards". My indirect reply was 'but this is the Christmas season - why don't you expect miracles?' (being the smart alack) What I didn't tell her was that there was a rail safety meeting at SEPTA the next day and I could hand-carry a couple thousand cards. The look on her face when I showed up - what's that commercial about 'priceless'. (Who says you can't have fun at work.)
