I retired last year. I'm thinking of going back to work again. Ohio Public
Employees Retirement System does not give me the $$$$$ that RTA did at
$25.13 per hour plus benefits.
Each year, in late Autumn, each operating employee must take eight hours
training called "Snow Pro". After an operator is "qualified" as a "Snow
Pro" you had better have your vehicle running up and down your route or
conditions better be so severe that you cannot move the bus, car, or train.
I know of one female operator who had a crowded bus, two years ago, headed
for Strongsville in a heavy snowstorm. When she got to Strongsville Park &
Ride Lot she discharged the passengers (even though the route still had five
miles further to go) claiming the weather was too bad for her to continue.
She discharged the passengers and the next day RTA discharged her. No, RTA
does not shut down in the snow.
Washington, DC has the problem of not enough snow fighting equipment to keep
things clear. The Cleveland-Akron-Canton megacity has over 2000 pieces of
snow fighting equipment. Even here at my place we have the Summit County
plows, City of Cuyahoga Falls plows and National Park Service plows.
Sometimes, during the periods when it's snowing at the rate of 1 or 2 inches
an hour the road gets snow covered but still navigable if one knows how a
motor vehicle operates and behaves in such weather. Otherwise when the
snowfall is "normal" things are pretty clear. This morning was nice for
going to the stores. The Weather Channel had everyone so scared they all
stayed home. Giant Eagle and Sams Club were both nearly empty at 8:30am
today.
