The thing that gets me about most models is that we see them running around layouts and they don't have a motorman.
The other day I found this fantastic model of a Skoda articulated trolley bus swinging around a double parked car .... it was following a magnet under the street. But it had no model driver inside steering it.

And now Bob, you saw all those HO German models in my basement. You might recall that the coaches all had people in them. I bought several splines of unpainted people and finished them myself. What you might not have noticed was the profiling. There was a girl in my favorite model store who was adamant that dark complected people should never appear on the streets of her town. So I finished one of the coaches in her honor and took it over to show it to her on Martin Luther King's birthday. There were a number of traveling U. S. servicemen in uniform in the H. O. gauge coach. The white guys were all in the first class end of the coach; the Blacks were all in the second class end. I asked her if she liked the way I finished it. You could tell she didn't know if I was yanking her chain or not. I was pulling it for all it was worth.

The other think one notices at the BSRA or East Penn or any other meets is that the assortment of models and their surroundings are not true to life. I mean Birneys running with Boeing light rail cars.

Perhaps East Penn should support modules that show how time has progressed? One with open cars and dirt streets. Another with 1940s automobiles and PCCs. Another with LRVs on rights of way and crowded streets next to it. Pardon me for dreaming or thinking out loud.

I would love to see some displays like that at PTM in O-guage .. something big enough that people can understand it.
