Putting a car on time from the city loop was done using a more informal
method. Time was the main concern for a city c.o.t. If someone was sitting
in the station on "report" then they would go to the Car Starter and get a
car out of the yard, set it up, pull up to the Administration Building then
leave S. H. Jct on the late cars time. If no Extra Board Operator was
available then any operator who was off-duty and in uniform would be asked
if they wanted to do this. If no operators were available then it didn't get
done at the city end. Like I said there had to be time to write the
scheduled times on the day card, go to the Car Starter and get a car, then
prepare the car for service and leave on time. It was easier to do it at the
end of the line or, during periods of close headways, short-turn the late
car at Castle Shannon (Rts 35/36), West Library (Rt 35), Neeld Avenue (Rts
42-42/38), Dormont Wye (Rt 42/38). Route 42/38A cars were normally not
short-turned since the service was limited. They could have a c.o.t. leave
from Castle Shannon, however.
Neeld Avenue Loop usually required a Route Foreman to be present if a
1700-series car was turned. The 1600s ran right around the loop but for some
reason the 1700s had a habit of "walking off the rail". There were two AM
and two PM school trippers to/from S.H.Jct and Neeld Avenue Loop which
always had 1600s assigned.

But yes, cars were put on time in the city. However, it was normally done at
the route ends.In the case of "trippers" on their last outbound run, they
just ran late inasmuch as they were returning to S H Jct after reaching the
end of the line.
