Some of the group purchased by DC Transit in 1957 lasted until the  
mid-1970s.

I  remember how Capital Transit bought a whole fleet of those little gas 
old-look  GMs for service on the Montgomery County lines around Silver Spring, 
 Maryland.   I saw them in the mid 1950s ... probably  1954.   Didn't last 
long before they were worn out.  I figure  they probably had a life 
expectancy of perhaps 100,000 miles before they  needed to be reengined.   That 
might have taken two years in transit  service.   I should ask Dick Kotulak how 
long they were in  service.
