 Ed, Crich in the UK managed to get grants and start a comprehensive
professional scanning programme. You are so right, scanning does not require
much skill--just methodology and cleanliness--but identifying and captioning
the scans is the big issue. They used to regularly publish unknown images in
their journal with some success. But, as we have found on this listserve,
unknown images can produce lots of doubtful responses or guesses.
